A typical plant of tropical seashores, this perennial vine forms large mats of long, sturdy shoots from an underground rootstock on coastal dunes and beaches just above the high tide line throughout the tropics worldwide. It has thick, leathery, bilobed leaves and very attractive, large, purplish pink, trumpet-shaped flowers. It is quite similar to Canavalia rosea in general appearance, which grows in the same ecological niche, but the two are not related. In cultivation it makes an excellent ground cover that will withstand drought, poor, sandy, saline soils, and look good even under the harshest coastal conditions. As one of the toughest pioneer plants it is one of the best choices to stabilize sandy soils. It is suitable for tropical and warm temperate climates in USDA Zones 9 and above.
