Audio Mixer: Tom Clapp. With a gritty live sound that translates efficiently to record, the Fever is the kind of band one could easily picture opening for fellow New York City rock bands the Rapture or the Walkmen. The band's organ and raspy vocals give Red Bedroom a jolt of early punk, which, combined with an adept sense of rock & roll, has signs that the Fever has been spending equal time listening to proto-punk and garage rock bands of the '60s. After a so-so start with "Cold Blooded" the band begins to sound more confident, with jerky, dancey numbers such as "Gray Ghost," and " "Ladyfingers." They also have an appreciation for the '50s: "Put It on You" features teary-eyed lyrics in an effort to win back a girl and is complete with backup vocals. While the album slows down for the last few tracks, the Fever already establishes enough swaggering tunes to be taken seriously. ~ Kenyon Hopkin
