Hi Mick,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Community.

Sorry to know that you are facing this issue.

If you have a laptop, then ensure to have the battery charged to 100% and also plug in the power cord. Unplug all external devices connected to the computer and restart the computer to check if this helps. If the issue persists, then you may plug in a different monitor to the computer and check for the display on the other monitor.

This issue is most likely due to display driver so you need to update the display driver and also install any pending updates on the computer to check the status.

Keep us informed to help you further.

Hi,

I checked my monitor specifications 1280x1024x75Hz - this should be OK (I think), so why didn't it work?

I did get my computer to respond after trying F2 on start up (settings option on the Dell start up screen) but it took many attempts before it seemed to respond (timing is everything, seems you have to hit the right spot!). This then gives you options to System Restore which I did from my last System Image backup on an external drive - all sorted now back to a working WIN 7 again!

I did try a repair disk CD but this never got past the video mode error message / screen.

I'm not going to load WIN 10 again until I find a reason why this happened.

Interestingly my son's Sony Vaio 64bit laptop took the upgrade no problem. My Dell is a 34 bit machine, purchased 2007, might this be the problem????

Hope this helps, good luck

I swapped monitors and got the same problem.

Then I changed the settings to a lower spec after reading a thread that suggested that this would work - it did not, as I suspected.

Tried to load a previous restore point as above but got nowhere.

Tried to reload Win 7 from CD but was asked for updated drivers.  Looked on C:

drive but could not find any.

Sick of the whole fiasco.

I have the same problem - also with a Dell Dimension 9100

I was completely locked out by black screen with message cannot display this video mode. Cannot get into safe mode and no help in BIOSW setup. I have tried several different monitors with nio scuess

This is the 10th Windows 10 update I have carried out with no problems before so it must be related to a recent update.

Have now started to reinstall Windows 7 from scratch

Same error message (cannot display this video mode, etc.) and here's what I discovered (and solved the problem):

Everything was working fine until I simply relocated my monitor to a different location in my office, reconnected the monitor to the same desktop computer, and then got the error message.  Nothing I tried could get rid of it.

I then realized that the only thing different after I relocated the monitor was that I was now using an extension VGA cable (an older one which I had purchased some years ago) to connect the computer to the monitor.  I then disconnected and removed the extension cable, and the error message disappeared!

I hope this is helpful to someone out there with a similar situation.
